when getting a website, would it make any difference if my site was a .com or .com.au, would a .com still appear in the australia search results...

A .com website will cost you about between $6 and $9USD a year at www.godaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com)

A .com.au website is about $44AUD for two years at

http://www.netregistry.com.au (http://www.netregistry.com.au/)

Domains in AU are more tightly controlled.

The search wouldn't matter all that much depending on how it is submitted to search engines and that is a whole complicated subject on its own.

To get a .com.au domain name you need an ABN & the name of the website must be an acronym or directly relate to the business.

.com domains are CHEAP!!

i have an abn and the name is for business, but it's all very pricy for a simple thing, going to use geocities free website for now...and then upgrade to a .com later, and as you said here CHEAP!!

You are aware that anything you put on geocites becomes the property of geocities? I wouldn't use them ... actually, when they brought in that policy, I quickly moved elsewhere.

Buy yourself a domain name. There are lots of companies providing the hosting.

I use Namesecure - have done so for three years now and will extend my time with them when the next bill comes due. Don't bother with the .au business, unless you need to buy lots of server space as well. Your current ISP plan almost certainly contains webspace. A host like namesecure just points browsers to that space. For example, my website is hosted by bigpond, but the domain hosting is namesecure and, apart from a couple of pages where I haven't redone the links yet, a visitor wouldn't know.

I used Melb IT and got the one i wanted for $140.......i was told that they were the best and more reliable than most.

All i have to do now is work out how to put my $140 domain into use.......help appreciated as i havent got a clue

Clueless, that's good. I'll offer my services for an extortionate rate :D (seriously, I'm happy to do work for anyone on anything that involves writing - got a manual that needs doing or redoing? Website? Company history? Family history that lacks punch? Hire a writer. I'm here ... and I'm poor:D )

Do a course Steve. Start simple and let the rotten thing grow from there. You can hire someone for squillions to prepare an amazing site for you, but even a one page site needs maintenance, so the smart and cheap way is to do it yourself and learn as you go. It's no harder than word processing - easier actually, but it is a different world so have a look at the WEA courses and go from there (you do have WEA where you come from don't you?)

Richard ...the reason geocities is good for me is it's dirt cheap and i can build the site myself, i have no problems using there 'site builder' as no html knowledge is required...but...if yahoo is to be avoided then can you recommend and similar alernative...

i used melbourn IT years had get new domain for new co, used www.cheapdomains.com.au (http://www.cheapdomains.com.au) a lot cheaper plus very good deals on hoisting/email.

Give geocittes a miss. Try your own service provider first, most offer enough free space to build a petty substantial web site.

If you want to let people know you are 100% Australian then use .com.au - you must have an Australian address to use .com.au whereas anyone from anywhere can register .com. Think you will find that Australian search will pick up .com.au first then search for the word Australia, or other selected words.

For your own domain etc try contacting Steve at http://www.cyanide.com.au tell him that Neil from Woodwork Forums suggested you contact him. They are fairly new, but have years of experience, heaps of knowledge of the net and all its workings, they are also the host of these forums.

You don't need to know HTML code or anything like that now. All you need is a program like Microsoft Front Page and you can set up a brilliant site with ease. You will also need an FTP program, go to http://www.tucows.com and do a search for ftp you will find heaps. Go for the ones with a 5 cow rating.

I got a com.au domain so it will come up on aussie searches.

I know when I google for aussie sites I look for an "au" suffix and usually don't bother investigating if it aint there.

the prices are great, the service is excellent
and I specifically wanted sub-domain facilities which they cater for.

If my business drifts to different products etc I can easily setup a new web address without any hassles.
e.g.
my (second) primary domain is ausmade.com.au
one of my subdomains is exclusiveprints.ausmade.com.au
Lately I have been thinking about woodcraft.ausmade.com.au

Though I really do need to update my sites they're all horribly out of date.
