I wonder if anyone else is bothered by these birds, which migrate here from Papua-New Guinea during the summer. Their annoying repetitive call often starts at 3.00 a.m. and continues intermittently for hours. This is why I am posting this at 3.45 a.m.

the koel is also a parasitic bird- it lays eggs in a host birds nest, as doo all teh cuckoo family.

spray him with a hose and he'll fly elsewhere to bother someone else. dont kill him though all he wants is a shag after all. he's doing his impression of john travolta at the disco to attract olivia newton john...

Yes, we have one that comes every bloody year and favours the mulberry tree next door. Almost incessant bird calls. :(

Right on Al.

Great place, winters not cold. (though you can justabout melt in summer)

Great beaches, sharks, jellyfish & stingers so you can't swim all year but the beaches are great anyway.
:p :p :p

Only seem to have trouble with them since they stopped kids having air rifles. Ditto the increase in the number of Indian Mynahs:(

Any body want a pet Golden Whistler?

It's a long story to type out but... he likes his own reflection... from the time it is barely light enouh to see it til it's too dark to see it.

Golden Whistlers measure 16 - 17.5 cm & say a whole lot more than the link suggests & are VERY loud for a little bird.

Rocker,

If you did the sensible thing and observed daylight savings, that would be an hour less you would have to put up with it ;)

Seriously, we were very happy when daylight savings started because the ruddy birds were waking us up at 5:30 every morning. 6:30 we can handle...

Geez you have well behaved birds down there.

The Kookas and the currawongs started clearing their throats at 4.30 up here before daylight savings. :(

The noise of the surf drowns out all but the loudest ones ;)

Ours kick off about 4.30, followed by our resident rooster, who has trouble distinguishing between a sun and a headlight, I've offered him an invite to Xmas lunch but I don't think he understands:rolleyes:
Of course as soon as the birds start the dogs have to have a yap, then the bloody horses come for a look and a snort.

Worse than the Koels are their 'cousins' the channel billed cockoos, who sing in unison and reply all damn night long, living on mulberries and figs.
Twice the size, twice the noise.

When working up at the block I've noticed there's a rooster that crows all day. I hope it shuts up when the sun goes down or I might have to assassinate it.

It might shut up when the sun goes down but it'll probably start up again at around 4.00 am.

Well, the damned koel is back and it has stripped all the fruit off my jaboticaba tree. The picture shows a bowl of the fruit that we gathered before the koel arrived, about three weeks ago. We had been hoping to pick another crop at the weekend. No such luck:mad:

I'll second that. Those Channel Bills are enough to drive you to criminal acts such as killing wildlife.
The adults are bad enough but the chicks constant screech is madening.
and to top it off the chicks stay in the nest for about 3 months with their real parents hanging around whilst the poor host parents are driven to exhaustion trying to feed a chick that is near twice the size of thenselves.
