Hey ,

As a potty mouth myself I understand the value of editing sweariness.

However why are words like "@r$e" that are intrinsically aussie in nature to use on the potty register but words like bastard arnt on same ?

eh ?

Do you like your worms fried, natural, kilpatrick, BBQ'd or in a nice satay sauce perhaps.

Whichever way appeals, I hope you enjoy them. :D :D

Bastard file, n, typically the one that tears the skin off your knuckles, destroys the thing you were filing and ends up sailing across the room at mach 10 with it's name screamed after it...

We gave you a forum where you can say what you want but some of you still aren't happy.

Our language has always been expressive and I haven't seen anyone here in my short time offended by any "swearing". A simple PM to the offending party by the offended one would do.

Shedhand, yes they are swearing.

Take an Oxford dictionary, and look up a questionable word. If it's says 'vulgar' next to it, then it's swearing.

I'd like to know that if, by chance, my wife reads this forum, the only thing she might be offended by is something I have typed in, not someone's inability to leave their blue streak at the door.

And I'm someone whose mum would make you blush with what she can come up with.

What the fcuk (thats on my grandaughter's t-shirt so it must be ok...)

Whilst that maybe on your granddaughter's t-shirt IMO it is not okay and not necessary on this forum.

Whilst I usually don't comment or reply to posts with swearing you wanted to know if anyone has been offended over your swearing so this time I decided to post and tell you that I am. The intent of swearing is to offend, by its nature. This board is often frequented by young people seeking assistance. I have been known to swear, but very rarely, if ever, when asked not to. There is simply no need, and we have been asked not to by those who put in their time to maintain the board for us. That's enough - surely?

Shedhand,
I've used this analogy before, you may find it helpful. There's a business (U-Beaut) that makes and supplies finishing products. It pays for a clubhouse where woodworkers and those even remotely interested in woodworking can get together and chat about their interests. The club doesn't directly benefit the business, but the owners are willing to pay for the running of the club for the goodwill it generates. There's a few discrete signs on the walls giving the business name, but no direct advertising.

In return for this openhandedness the owners and managers of this club simply ask patrons and visitors to abide by a few simple rules and "no swearing" is one of them. As has pointed out there's very good reasons for this. Even if there were absolutely no reason at all for any of the rules the fact that the club owner has set them should be reason enough. If you don't like the rules, and continue to misbehave then there's a good chance that the bouncer will grab you and throw you out the door.

The clubhouse is open to people from all over the world and of any age. There's quite a few regular members and some of them are founts of wisdom and knowledge, others are here to learn whatever they can, some are always good for a laugh and to lift the spirits, and some visit once to get help with a problem and are never heard of again. There's hand tool experts, machinery nuts, class clowns, tradesmen (and women) from a variety of trades, all willing to share their skills and knowledge. There's discussions that are very woody related and others that are totally unrelated. People enjoy coming to this club, and some spend hours here every day. It's got a friendly caring atmosphere and is always supportive of members that are experiencing any difficulties. In short, it's a great place to be.

The clubhouse also has an open door for anyone who just wishes to be a spectator, they're not even required to identify themselves. So visitors could be anyone old enough to manage a computer. Now imagine that into this cosy, friendly atmosphere comes someone who is loud and abrasive, swearing like a trooper and generally spoiling the atmosphere. When asked to abide by the rules he's miffed and shouts out that it's his right to act as he pleases. He's very assertive about his rights but hasn't a clue about his responsibilities.

I've worked in some pretty crude environments and can swear with the best of them but I try to temper my language around here and don't believe it's an infringement of my freedom of speech. If you came to my house and swore or blasphemed I would tell you quite firmly to desist and if you didn't comply I'd show you the door (with violence if required).
If you don't like how this club is run by its owners or managers then you're free to leave and start your own.

If you believe it's your right to swear and blaspheme you might want to head down to the ANZAC day dawn service next year and try it to see what happens.

Mick

That's nine people that you don't want to converse with you in what is a quiet night, or rather that's nine people that DON'T want to converse with you.

That's a great record for someone who has been a member of only 16 days and who has an unenviable record of most of his posts being a waste of space.

Of course the nine doesn't include whose very reasonable response to the original question started of your tirade.

Apart from your abhorrent choice of language you also seem to think that should immediately respond to your questioning post, and when not answered quickly enough for your liking you posted a sarcastic post entitled " You have an email ".

That I'm sure is calculated to win friends and influence people, NOT. Whilst we might, at times, disagree with the moderators decisions we at least appreciate them giving their unpaid time and effort and money to keep this board going.

Now you say that you know exactly what it takes to provide these forums. So then you know how much time and effort and money it cost to keep a board running, but the problem for you is this is a private board and not government paid and run and you, as well as us, are here solely by their grace.

You also say that you developed and ran a Government intranet for a number of years. So tell us when you ran that, did you allow and condone swearing on a government intranet. Did you moderate any discussion and as such use the objectionable censorship to keep it in line?

You also say that you object to be censored when the issue is so topical and important. Again that is only your opinion, which so far hasn't proved to be worth very much.

, maybe it's time to do another of your daily good turns and restrict Shedhand's posting ability. I'm sure the board would be better of without him.

Or maybe we should have a poll on his continued membership?

I read it to be waste of good dovetails to be put on a coffin and buried, not a waste of good dovetails on the pope. I suppose it depends on how you read it.

Biggest prblem with forums like this is that the emotion beinhd a post is not easily conveyed and sometimes a joke or sarcasim is lost!

If he cracks it coz it is too much work cleaning up after twits who won't abide the rules, what will happen to the forum?

Maybe the forum could close if the moderators job gets too hard

The orange room was setup to try and reduce moderators workloads.
Maybe this is only a teething problem.

But maybe the rule breakers should only have access to the orange room and not be able to access the main forum.

Btw this is an international forum with both dotcom and dotcomau addresses.

To Bodgy - I believe the term Yarpie is derived from the name Japie which is short for Plaas Japie which means farm boy (in Souf Effrika) and his name could also be Japie. Always thought we were woodies first then nationality second.

No wonder there are wars, even we can not keep the peace.:(

    No wonder my reddie didn't seem to dent his rep. :(

well personally i just got back after a few days away and i am a bit disappointed in the way the forum has gone. but the thing that troubles me most is how did shedhand get the rep points he has in such a short time with so few postings? it took me much longer than that to get all the green lights on and many more postings. i smell a rat, and niot a woodrat either. byb the way did i tell everyone i bought a woodrat today????

I was thinking the same thing Doug, but didn't go as far as suspecting anything untoward. Just thought it was a little unusual/annoying as I just got my last light on yesterday...

Hey Doug it wasn't one of the rats you met at my place they are innocent young things and I've never heard an expletive or vulgar squeek out of either one of them
LOL
Great to meet your guys

I suspect that I, amongst many others, have not selected "I disaprove" prior to issuing shedhand some reputation.

What I found is that once I read the resposne to 's post I couldn't give him a red one quick engough - in the haste I made the stuff up and didn't change the selection to the disaprove icon :o

I thnk it's a bit of a problem too. I wish that you had to mark either box, not have it default to the green one.

Anyway, Shedhand has posted an apology so let's just let it go now, give him the benefit of the doubt and move on.

Move on - I'm still chatching up on 500+ new posts. I'll get to his appology sometime next week at this rate. By the way, does anyone know anything about building a cyclone:D
