View Full Version : Subtle Avatars

I have noticed some Avatars are run of the mill pictures and others are more personal.

Christopher's current avatar shows either a nasty wound on the back of his head or lipstick - what does it mean? Did his SWMBO discover the lipstick and then belted him?

CraigB's shows a dinasaur - to do with the machine he works on (A mainframe)

Mine shows a No 2 bench plane with one of my pet snakes checking out the finer points of the bedrock mechanism.

What are the subtle messages in your Avatar that others may not have noticed?

Mine is the image of William of Ockham. He is credited with discovery of the razor (Occam's Razor), which he found under a bush on the side of the road when he was on his way home from the Friar and Fiddle Inn one Sunday evening. He saw it glistening in the moonlight and picked it up. His theory was that it had been put there by men from the moon. Their intention had been to lay in wait until someone walked by, whereupon they would leap out and slit the throat of the passerby. However, they had become bored and wandered off just minutes before William came along.

He used the razor to shave his scalp but it wasn't very good so he threw it away.

Or not.

I always thought one of the best parts of having an intimate make believe relationship with someone is that you can call them whatever you want. The other good bits include not having to bring them flowers, not having to remember anniversary's and not having to deal with your imaginary in-laws;).

Why not give her an inventive name? How about "Landseka's Avatar"? Sounds foreign and exotic......:D:D:D

Anyone identify mine? It has to do with my obsession with British History.

Clue: New Forest
It's the Rufus stone.

Wikipedia is your friend :p

Here stood the oak tree, on which an arrow shot by Sir Walter Tyrell at a stag, glanced and struck King William the Second, surnamed Rufus, on the breast, of which he instantly died, on the second day of August, anno 1100. King William the Second, surnamed Rufus, being slain, as before related, was laid in a cart, belonging to one Purkis, and drawn from hence, to Winchester, and buried in the Cathedral Church, of that city.

Well done Silent!

Last year on a business trip I skivved off and visited family, who live close to New Forest. We went for a walk and found the Rufus stone. I have other piccies of the stone inc members of my family which I've spared you.

The interesting part is that there is a school of thought who says Tyrell purposely shot William II, with the conivance of the nobility. Rufus was an abyssmal monarch in stark contrast to his father; the Conqueror. His brother Henry I was also nearby in the forest, at the time.

Henry I's reign was the last of the stability brought by the Normans. His heir William died in the White Ship and thus began the Stephen versus Maud civil wars, which ended with another Henry on the throne, who united the Anglos and Normans, and began the Plantaganet dynasty.

I have done all different kinds, with pets, favourite things, and or names, in favourite colours, blah, blah, blah.........

The one I have now is the least personal one I've ever had (It's just a photo)
This one is what I usually use, I created it from a few different photo's using PSP9, and refers to my home page site.

I tried to add an animated avatar that was 86 pixels x 59 pixels but couldn't get it to work. I could only get it to work by shrinking the animation to 80 pixels x 55 pixels. The maximum size of 80 x 80 stated on the User CP page must still apply.
