We travel overseas a couple of times a year, both near and far. I carry a phone only but SWMBO takes her phone and SIM card equipped tablet. Both of us have "roaming" engaged on our phones which costs about $10/day and each and every time we land in another country we receive an sms advising us of the need for it to avoid extra charges. No problem so far.
When we returned home recently, SWMBO received a bill for $2,241 for 747 mB of data usage over a period of 25 days. That's $3 per MB, folks! She assumed that the extra SIM card included on her mobile phone bill was covered in the roaming cost. Not so apparently. Did she receive a warning message on her tablet? Nope.
After a rather tense negotiation with the provider which included words like entrapment, price gouging, refusal and telecommunications ombudsman. they credited the charges and replaced them with the $10/day costs.
Once again, be very careful when travelling.
mick :)
