Organoil Decking Oil

Went to Bunnings on the weekend and asked for the best decking oil I can get for a new yellow balau deck that adjoins a salt water pool. The guy sold me Organoil Decking Oil and told me to prepare it by washing it down with water and some Nappysan.

Brought it home and my husband isn't happy as he feels that it won't work as well as another decking oil such as Sikkens. Apparently he thinks that because it is advertised as a natural product that it isn't going to the job that the others do and he has nicknamed it hippie oil!!

We are especially concerned as this deck has no cover and is going to have pool water splashing on it and we really want to give it the best protection we can.

If anyone can give advice on whether this product is going to be suitable or not for the job that would be great!

I can't speck for how Organoil will hold up compared to Sikkens, especially for your situation next to a salt water pool. But I use Organoil on our deck, and our neighbour uses Sikkens on his and I much prefer how Organoil soaks into the timer and does not mask it, where as Sikkens sits upon the timber and largely covers the timber with to me looks like watered down brown paint.

Having said that, we have to recoat every 6 months, his will not require that for a few years I expect.

Not sure this helps you at all..... but protection is one thing, and heavy protection may impact upon a pleasing or desired look. Me, I would rather replace the timber in ten years time than have it look unattractive and last forever.

Just some further info for you:-

Decking oils will require much more regular repainting than a product like Sikkens Cetol Deck.

Sikkens Cetol Deck will sit up as a coating on top of the timber. The oils sit in the timber, rather than on top.

Depends on which appearance you like best and how often you want to paint the deck!

Some oils (and I dont know about Organoil in this case) are far worse for dirt pick up and mould/mildew growth than a product like Cetol Deck. This depends on the oils formulation.

If you are painting timbers like balau with the Sikkens product check carefully with your Sikkens Reseller as there are some special instructions for painting oily hardwoods such as Balau.

A coating (of any kind) would give superior durability to an oil in the situation you describe (near pool, fully exposed).

Before proceeding I would check with the Organoil makers (not sure who they are) to see what their recommendations are for your situation. You can also ring a company in Sydney, 'Tenaru' who are the Australian Distributor for Sikkens Wood Finishes and they will give you their side of the story regarding Cetol Deck.

I can only comment on Organoil as that is all I have used I have been very happy with it but comments that as an oil it needs to be recoated regularly

my use was on a cubby deck, I recoated every couple of years
