G'day

I've just ripped all my CDs to 'puta, and am now cataloguing them. Reasonably straightforward, but detailed.

However, I have a conundrum to solve. At least some of you will remember an 80s UK band called The The (I guess they got sick of trying to think up something unusual to follow "The").

This particular band is proving problematic to fit into my cataloguing conventions. You see, I have dropped all references to "The" in band names, so instead of having
The Corrs or
Corrs, The

I just have Corrs

So which "The" should I drop for this band? First? Second? Perhaps both of them and just have a blank (which is technically what my convention demands)?

I could make an exception, and file them as
The, The
but which "The" should come first? By going back to that convention, surely it should become
The, The,

shouldn't it?

One wonders if they gave thought to the poor sods who have to do cataloguing!.....I'm starting to think they may have......

Please, I need your help before I lose any more sleep over this.....

Just call them 'The Stutterers', then shorten it to 'Stutterers', job done!

Hope this helps! (or not)

there's your problem right there.
you need to go back and revise your use (and non-use) of the definite article.

Obviously, the Beatles stay as the Beatles, but The Corrs are really the The Corrs -- because! -- likewise the The The are The The.

Get it?

BUT, what I'm more interested in is how your convention files the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
does it become
Berlin, Orchestra, Philharmonic
Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin
Orchestra, Philharmonic, Berlin
or
von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

The ripping pgm adds a yuge amount of unnecessary info to the file name, so for the classical stuff I had to go through and make the titles much shorter. I am far more interested in the piece of music, than who is playing it, conducting it, or soloing (although those details are nice to have they are still available in other tags.

That means I can just file it under
Beethoven, Ludwig van The,

with a sub-folder of
The Symphony No. 5

Get it?When I first heard of The Corrs, I thought it must have been The Cause :B (which made some kind of sense).

Years ago I saw some vision of an early BBC TV production where the old fuddy-duddy anchor introduced a band called The Pink Floyd (because everyone thought that a band name started with "The" back then). So surely following his logic and yours this problematic band is actually The The The? In that case I think Uncle Al's suggestion of The Stutters will gain some ground.

But then, to do justice to him it should be Th-The S-Stutt-tt-erers. At least taking off "Th-The" will save some time......

...the old fuddy-duddy anchor introduced a band called The Pink Floyd (because everyone thought that a band name started with "The" back then).

To be fair though, even Pink Floyd sometime referred to themselves as "The Pink Floyd". David Gilmour does so in the Live at Pompeii video, for instance...

Brett what's the program you used? and is it compatible with Macs?

dBpowerAmp (https://www.dbpoweramp.com/) Stephen, and yes there's a MAC version or you can get a master licence for MAC and PC. Pretty sure they have versions for other devices too.

I find it excellent, and it was referred to me by those who know. Comes with a suite of (I think) 4 different programs. One for ripping CDs to puta (in heaps of different formats), one for converting to other formats, another that does the same in batch mode (which is what I used). I converted the entire flac library (130Gb) in 6 steps, and it took a total of ~3 hours. There were some false starts while I got the folder names sorted out, but they have a their own forum (same format as this one) and the help was excellent.

As an example, the flac files are all in C:\2. MUSIC and I wanted to put the MP3 files in C:\2. MP3 MUSIC. Now within C:\2. MUSIC each artist has its own folder and then each album has its own folder. When I did the original rip it takes all the folder names from the CD (I guess you can do otherwise though), so I was getting
C:\2. MUSIC\Jimmy Barnes\Two Fires which I promptly changed to
C:\2. MUSIC\Barnes, Jimmy\Two Fires

but when I converted to MP3 it was going back to the original and I didn't fancy going through and renaming all over again (particularly with the classics and some problematic Jazz albums - classical tags are <complicated>).

So it meant I had to check the "Dynamic" box and put this code in:
[TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][origpath][][]\[origfilename] (this was the help I was given - not smart enough by myself).

The first two TRIMFIRSTFOLDER blocks mean ignore the artist and album name on the CD and then the next two blocks specify to use the path (Barnes, Jimmy) and album name (Two Fires) that I had specified.

Once I had that sorted it was full steam ahead (it remembers what you have specified for the next time, even if you close the pgm).

It was indeed that that saved me from getting The, The when I really wanted The The or The had I so chosen :D

I didn't get Perfect Tunes with it (for playlist management) but went with JRiver Media Center instead (again on the advice of those who know).
