Hi All,

I have just finished construction of a Euro Oak bed and the customer wants to see samples of matt or satin finish options. Generally have finished most of my furniture with oil as I like the simple application and the natural feel and grain enhancement it provides.

I've also used Feast Watson Danish Oil once which I liked but I found it difficult to apply, primarily becuase I could not seem to find a cloth that did not leave some fluff behind.

What do people recommend for a nice clear matt or satin finish that will enhance the grain of Euro Oak without yellowing the timber colour (I find oil tends to add a bit of a gold/yellow tinge)

Also, what's your recommended brand for your recommended finish?

Below are some photos of the headboard before glue up. Has some really nice patterns in the grian that I want to bring out with the finish.

could you use de-waxed shellac or the heat resistant one that ubeaut sells? Cheers WC

My thought also. White Shellac (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/dewaxed.html) (dewaxed) would be my first choice. Cut 4 - 6 parts metho to 1 part shellac and wiped on with a clean soft cloth.

Will not change the colour of the timber any more than wetting it with water.

2 - 3 coats and if too bright a rub back with Tripoli Powder (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/tripoli.htm) or even EEE-Ultra Shine (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/eee.htm).

Go to spotlight and buy some white flannelette sheet. This should do the job nicely.

Hope this is of some help.

Excellent. Thanks for the replies.
I will make up some finish samples with the dewaxed shellac and see how it goes.

Will be good to expand my finishing repertoire as well :-)

Last night I made up samples of Matt and satin varnish and two Danish oil, one of which I will buff back with steel wool to dull it to a Matt finish. The additional shellac option should give them enough to choose from.

Cheers
