Decoupage (and other) 'cheat'?

I have orded the Bible and will soon become indoctrinated by the incarnate. Till then...

Years ago when I was a kid (about last week), on one of those programs like Better Homes and Gardens or some such, I remember seeing something about them making a decoupage item.

For the high gloss, deep finish, insead of lyering on thousands of layers of shellac or varnishes, I remember them using this stuff that they poured on in a single application.

I remember them saying that it had a high surface tension that meant that as the excess ran over the edges of the work, but because it was so viscous it left a thick layer of product, evenly spread to a mirror finish (!!!), evening out hollows etc. Must have been a sponsored segment. Care had to be taken to ensure the work was level so as to leave an even layer of finish, and the environment dust free etc...

Now lately, I've been thinking about this. And wondering if I should give it a whirl not necessarily on a decoupage project cause I'm not into them, but perhaps some piece of marquetry I've buggered up etc... At least so that I know I can wipe it off the store of ideas sitting in the dark recesses.

Trouble is, I don't know, and haven't been able to find out from all my usual suppliers, what this stuff is. I've wondered if it was some DIY available finishing resin perhaps, or maybe it just didn't last because it wasn't any good.

Any helpful ideas? Or should I just wipe my 'smart' ideas out of my head and go back to the orignals and the bests?

Thanks for that Luke, looks like what I was after. I'll give it a burl and throw up a post about how it turns out. Perhaps it's not an ideal, but hey, life wasn't meant to always be perfect.

I saw some at bunnings on the weekend, its a two part mix. It was in the paint dept. Not sure of the price though.

I think Envirotex is another brand.

I have seen this on a boardroom table, very practical thick glossy layer. Kinda let down though by the hardened drips left on the underside of the edges (the stuff self levels on the substrate and the excess drips off the edges - put down drop sheets).
