Whatever happened to kangaroo tail soup?

When young, I have vague memories of seeing cans of Kangaroo tail soup, but haven't seen one for decades.

In supermarkets, you can buy kangaroo mince and cuts, but what happens to the tails?????

There is noting better than oxtail soup as a winter meal, and kangaroo meat, although having little fat, may have enough to make the tails tasty as well..... and there would be a lot of bones to broil.

But where do you find a tail or soup in a can, without a .222, or did they all go to Russia or dog food?

Haven't seen it for a while, but had it when I was a youngster & it was good, the way dad made it. Not sure where you'd find tails now, but some specialist 'gourmet' butchers may have them.

Any human consumption processors I dealt with didn't take the tails. They where left in the paddock. The net gain wasn't worth the trouble apparantly. Not sure if the pet food processors take them.

By-the-by, the Greenies killed the Russian market and are doing a stand up job of killing the local market. The HC chillers in our region have been closed. The processor is having trouble making ends meat I think.

Never seen tails for sale. The cuts you can buy from Coles and I think IGA are very good though.

Ten years ago kanga tails were the first freezer in on The left in woolies in Kalgoorlie. The had the same place that the bread has in woolies on the coast. They were $1 each and wrapped in foil. Ready for the fire. Same in Alice Springs. Mighty tasty.

We eat quite a bit of kangaroo meat, various cuts, and I far prefer it to beef, lamb and pork.

Must say it is quite a while ago since we had kangaroo tail soup, would have been in the 60s I think.

All the kangaroo meat sold in Victoria has been processed in SA as it is illegal to process kangaroo meat in Victoria, very short sighted indeed.

A couple of years ago we had a real problem with kangaroos at the Puckapunyal Army Base and in the end they had to be shot, but could not be processed for consumption in Victoria.

Go figure.
