For those who wanted to know Feast Watson Mastertouch Orange Flake Shellac is dewaxed, the downside is their technical dept. doesn't the difference between waxed and dewaxed. Besides that I suggested they atleast label dewaxed on their labels, so the next time you go to Bunnings of all places atleast you can take comfort in knowing that they are dewaxed.

yeah I just realised that, that's what happens when your working with metho all day your brain turns to mush. For what ever reason I kept thinking of $98 a litre instead of 98 for 4 either way $150 is all day everyday which is better than $185 or $166. Up to you I'm not twisting anyones hand.:U

The main difference in the most simplest reply in ordinary Methylated Spirit has a percentage of water that might be higher than the industrial Methylated Spirit. The industrial stuff should be better controlled.

Yes, but methylated spirit is hygroscopic, i.e. It absorbs water from the air, so the industrial stuff may start off lower water content but, by the time that you get to use it will have the same content as cheapo from bunnies!

:? How in the world do you figure that, even if what you said is true the cheapo stuff from bunnings the water content would increase therefore rendering it even more useless than what it already is.

So you go to bunnings and buy a product that you think is dewaxed but not labelled dewaxed and the gurus dont know if it is dewaxed, when you could buy the forum sponsors product which is 100% marked and used widely by other forum members.

There is also the Hard dewaxed shellac for the surfaces requireing a harder surface.

First of all I buy squat from Bunnings or masters except for titebond glue, second of all I was curious as to whether or not feast watson the shellac flakes available at bunings was waxed or dewaxed I called them the other day and they said it was dewaxed. Thirdly I buy 2kg for $40 of shellac flakes elsewhere which is a lot cheaper than oh forget it and lastly I do support the forum sponsors as much as I can.

100% Industrial Methylated Spirits (IMS100) or ETHANOL 100% are all the same thing. Also referred to ad denatured alcohol. The denaturant is there to stop it being used as a beverage.

The 100% means no added water but has between .05% to .1% of denature in it and can be between 99% - 100% pure alcohol.

95% IMS means that there should not be more than 5% water in the product and also includes a denaturant similar to the above. Some MSDS's state 5% - 10% water

Methylated spirits without 95% or 100% on the label can legally contain up to 43% water because to be legally called Methylated Spirits the liquid must be OP (over proof) ie: it must burn when a match is put to it and metho will burn so long as it has 57% alcohol content. This stuff is good for washing windows and some other household stuff but is absolutely useless for mixing with shellac. You might just as well mix it with vodka. The shellac will be ruined and so will the vodka. :C Oh for shame.....

If you keep the lid firmly on your drum, tin or bottle of metho it should not absorb any appreciable amount of water from the air.

If you think tour Meths has water in it pour a little into another container and add a few drops of mineral turpentine then shake... No not you the container. If it goes cloudy there is water present if it is as clear as it was when you poured it then it is waterless.

We do this test with every 200litre drum of ethanol we get in. Can't afford to have any water at all in our shellac that is being transformed into friction polish. Water and wax don't mix too well at all.

As for prices of 100% IMS we buy it wholesale in 200 litre drums, 4 drums at a time and it costs us $1.90 per litre delivery adds another $60 odd dollars to the price so around $1580.

If you have a need for it you should be able to buy 20lt or 60lt drums for around $2.50 -$3.50 per litre from a chemical supply co. It is usually readily available in either 4 lt or 5 lt bottles from most good paint shops.

If you can't get 100% use 95% both will work with shellac... The 95 % may bloom easier when used in damp or humid conditions where the 100% won't bloom as easy.

For what it's worth all of the U-Beaut shellac products are made using only 100% IMS most other shellac manufacturers/blenders use 95%. All our premixed shellac products also carry a best before or best buy date on the bottle. Don't know of any other brands on the market that are brave enough to do that.

Good on you Neil thanks for clearing all that up once and for all I hope some have learned something correctly for a change just like I have with that simple test for checking for contamination. I too use 100% IMS for mixing shellac and wouldn't use anything less, I know your products are spot on and they are only that way because you have taken the time to educate yourself to bring it to that level. You care about quality because your old school, unfortunately not many businesses out there do that nor do they care. They infest our nation with low cost, low quality and China made products not fit even to on. Neil it's people like you I enjoy doing business with.
