Hi all... standard introduction & nice to kind of meet you all.

I'm a Brisbane resident but hoping to very soon be remote Victorian. I've recently discoved a passion for working with timber after only picking up my first power tool this year, now I think my lungs have learned to extract oxygen from sawdust.

I'd like to pursue an apprenticeship in furniture making, but for now I'm enjoying building a portfolio and learning from mistakes :D

Welcome msmcq. Once the bug has bit there is not much you can do but hang on for the ride.

A quick word of "wisdom" about looking for a furniture making apprenticeship. Most cabinetmakers do nothing but screw white boxes together these days, even the tafe course removed some of the timber projects to do some melamine ones not long after i finished. Many furniture places won't go looking for apprentices, they wait for keen people to find them. This shows that they have real interest in the work and that they are not just looking for a job. I landed my apprenticeship after applying for what was on offer, not even getting a phone call, and finally just opening the phone book and calling every single cabinetmaking workshop in the area. Less than a week later i started!

Thanks all for the welcome. I'd like to look at Furniture Finishing as first choice, machining after that and all else fails option - upholstery. I have a real thing for older furniture, particularly marquetry and I hoped to start small. I've no doubt it will lead to something else down the track but ya gotta start somewhere huh?
I have not yet approached any furniture makers in or near the town I'm moving to. I'm hoping to check out a few in the coming weeks as I'm elligible to receive a government grant to start an apprenticeship (bonus for me and whoever wants to take me on) so finding my way down there (first trip in the relocation process) and hoping to pay a few visits around there to see what I can come up with.
Yellow pages seems like a good idea hey?
