Painting over 2 pack polyurethane?

Hi guys

I have a dining table and chair setting that I think was resprayed sometime ago with a 2 pack polyurethane paint that is now very marked and chipped.

It now needs to be repainted and and I was wondering if anybody has a good quick way to prepare and repaint it using something other than 2 pack as we use the setting for "day to day" usage.

2-pac urethanes are HARD by nature.

To get a subsequent coat of something to stick to them, there needs to be a 'tooth' for it to grip onto. In other words, the glossy finish needs to be dulled.

The usual way to deal with that is by putting fine scratchmarks in by sanding, or by scuffing with the scourer pads (like the green scotchbrite dishwashing ones-except the softer grey ones are finer-available from many hardware stores). You could try using steel wool if you wanted to-depending on the texture in the existing finish.

There is no easy way to restore a chipped and scratched 2-pack finish to my knowledge. To improve the look you could just wax it in a colour to match the timber colour. If the table top is good it would be worth removing the finish by scraping and sanding and then oil and wax it.

I know a guy who repaired a damaged two pack floor finish.
he had to sand back almost the entire floor and apply a fresh two-pack finish.

Removing all of a two-pack finish to apply something different might be more work than the table and chairs are worth.

Is it possible that the finish is a pre- or post- catalysed lacquer? as a different repair technique would apply
