how to finish?

hi, our builder has constructed our timber framed cottage almost to lock-up stage. It has ply ceilings & exposed oregon beams & rafters. I don't mind the raw look but my wife would prefer a gloss finish and maybe even a stain on the beams. The timber is not dressed & i would like to keep sanding to a minimum. It's a very high pitched roof!! What do people suggest? Is there a stain/lacquer that could be sprayed over everything that would look ok and give a gloss on rough timber with minimal sanding?
