I would like to point out this is not to destroy get togethers it is to make people aware of "Full responsibility for actions". Making sure workshops/shed are safe and equipment is safe to use, those using it are aware of any problems with equipment and safe practices are in place at all times.
I have witnessed a number of situations where many laugh it off, until someone is injured or legal action is taken. Having a daughter who has been in legal offices of solicitors has seen where it can lead.
Recently a mate (not a forum member) and I were discussing club members and home visits as a group. The topic of insurance raised its ugly head, coverage should anything happen, this includes neighbours. This discussion has been going on for some time and was prior the last Sydney Get Together at Nz-carvers After the GtG I discussed similar with young Dave.
My own club have GtG's at members homes the topic has been brought up there also.
I am raising the matter for discussions, I did e-mail Neil (U-beat) first.
When a guest comes along he/she is a 3rd party, which is what most home insurance covers. If they suffered an injury even such as a sprained ankle on the property to the point of requiring medical intervention and rendering them incapable of working for even just a few weeks a legal minefield can be opened up. Even more so if your renting a property. Many of us would waiver it off, the likes of some partners of the injured may not as they may rely highly on the income the injured brings in.
Be aware an insurance company may not cover any injury if that person injured has a pre-existing condition of any sort.
