I had the great pleasure of being at Hare & Forbes today. No not because of their sale or that we had our group there as usual.

Hare & Forbes at 11am did as they always do here in Sydney sounded the bell and stopped everything total silence for 1min and the "Last Post played".

When I was serving on HMAS Yarra, we were steaming on the 11th of November and didn't sound the "Last post" at 11am.
I respectfully took the captain to task and got an apology.
Did a cenotaph guard once and that is something one never forgets with a good bugler sounding the "Last post" behind you as you stand at reverse arms.
I companies were I've worked in the past I just took it upon myself to broadcast the 11am "Last post" of the "PA System" and never once got into trouble.
We who are left and enjoy the peace & freedom of this great country MUST remenber those you paid such a price for us.

I'm not sure about the 11am detail, but we make a pretty big deal of it here in the States. For a few years, our parade was relegated to a winding smaller street, but this year one of the floats is too big for it, so veterans' groups prevailed upon the city fathers to restore it to the main drag. One hour, beginning at 1030, so at least it straddles 11am.

Most gummint offices, schools and banks are closed for the day.

Absolutely what is a few minutes of anyones time to respect and regard what a lot of young blokes did by contributing to a nations character by a sacrifice of their lives and to stand proud for their country.

I know I won't forget.

I have 2 relatives who where killed in conflict abroad in the Great War (one in Turkey and one in France) and one who died as a result of a battle related illness many years after WWII.

Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day are very important to me, and I have tried to instill the same in my kids.

A big yay for H&F for having a minutes silence, and a big poo poo to the Govt. department and anywhere else that didn't.

Teaching about this part of Australian history (all Australian history for that matter) should be required learning in schools from Kinder to 6th form, but sadly, it is severely lacking.

The Last Post is one of the more stirring pieces of music that I know of.
