View Full Version : The Pencil thief

Mike Busby

There is a pencil thief in my shed. There must be. I bought 3 new carpenters pencils the other day. Sharpened one and put it in the cracked brew mug on the window sill where I put all my pencils. The other two I hid in a drawer. Now whatever creature the pencil thief is he/it has ferreted out all my pencils and has now made a secret nest of them somewhere. That along with my yellow wax crayon for marking steel, my engineers chalk and sundry other items like my straight and bent scribes, combination square and a few old school compasses I used to use for drawing circles have all gone.

The last pencil disappeared yesterday and this morning I went back to the shed to find both new pencils now in a different drawer and one of the scribes has turned up out of the blue. My wife thinks I am going nuts, she could be right but if I catch the mongrel he will have a very sore rear end from my size 11 EEE boot. Oh crap now my biro has disappeared. The bugger is in the house now. Oh hang on it's behind my ear.

Dooh just went into the laundry - no mans land I call it - and there sitting on top of the second fridge is a couple of cups chock full of pencils, compasess and scribes. The mongrel is storing them in the laundry. ....
Whats that dear .....
Empty my pockets before putting my clothes in the dirty clothes basket??? Why?????

The existence of worm holes between sheds has been also posited here. Pencils and screws vanish in one persons shed, only to reappear in somebody else's shed half a world away. May explain socks too.

Nothing explains socks. How can they change colour between putting them on and going out?
On the bright side, it's surprising what will come out of the washing machine safely - "paper" money, camera memory sticks, though paper hankies still give trouble.
Cheers,
Jim

It must be the same bloke who keeps pinching my steel rules and then returns them to another part of the workshop where they ought not to be.

Its my wife. She steals my glasses all the time too. And my phone. Drives me mad. And then when I blame her she denies all knowledge. The hide of it!

I put a remote control through the wash a couple of months ago. Still works. Great technology.

When you find the scoundrel, could you ask him to return the Windsor Beader I bought at Ken Turner's Auction a few weeks ago. I know I put it down on a bench somewhere, or maybe in a draw, but I'm certain some bugga has made off with it....
It looks like this one, if you see it, please return it.:((

...and the new house numbers I bought years ago to put on the fence, when we got one. Well, we got one, couldn't find thenumbers, so I bought more, fence fell over, got replaced and I still can't find the original numbers I bought :(

The fence is on its second set of numbers and the shed has swallowed 3 lots to date.

Ahhh Jim....the Dylan FAN???
..................
Cinderella, she seems so easy
“It takes one to know one,” she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he’s moaning
“You Belong to Me I Believe”
And someone says, “You’re in the wrong place my friend
You better leave”
And the only sound that’s left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

As a schoolie I have 'access' to pencils so I worked out a solution to the problem of the pencil thief. I brought home 3 boxes of them (20 in each box) all sharpened. Whenever i needed one i just went to the boxes. If the theif took one, no problem, there's heaps left to choose from.

Major problem is that I looked 2 days ago and there are only 3 pencils left and they are all blunt,ie have been used. I think the thief has a mineral deficiency and eats them.
When I asked the 'laundry attendant', "Have you seen any pencils? she answered, " I think there's one on the laundry shelf." ONE!!!!!

(I also love Dylan but this thresad needs to get back on track..........and that's not Highway 61.)

Jim,
the pencil thief paid me a visit...caught the bugga...with pockets full of them.:U:U:U

BTW does anyone still use those clutch pencils? I have a couple of boxes of leads that I won't use...
Peter

And later on as the crowd thinned out
I’s just about to do the same.

That damned pencil thief is clever.

I got so frustrated when working on-site that I drilled a hole thru one end of my chippies pencil and tied a large loop of string line through the end, so I could hang it around my neck.

Used it for an hour or two and then... :-

I suspect it was taken for walkies on it's leash.

It's not an 'orribly lurid fluorescent shade of yellow, green, orange or pink is it?

If so, it's probably one of mine and the thief is just messing with us.

(Why, oh why, is it that these fluorescent monstrosities seem to fade seamlessly into the background the minute you put them down? :C)

No it's my black one = though BD seems to think it's his for some reason.
But, how can you lose a black tape on a workbench? I don't even have any ebony that size.
As for fluorescent ones, I'm sure the manufacturers have a contract with the defence department for camouflage and are using up the remnants!

oz & ian I also had a request from another forum member by PM asking after the leads.
Here is what the pencil thief has left here, they are all 2mm...top to bottom

About ten H Staedtler
About ten F Staedtler
four & half 2H Staedtler
Six 2H Staedtler
and five & half unmarked, but about HB

I'm happy to send them, but I'm not sure what is fair to all three of you...?
Any thoughts....?
Any preferred leads?

(tounge in cheek) mix em all together and send a "lucky dip" assortment of ten or eleven leads to each of us. :p

more seriously ...
send each of us 3 x F, 3 x H, 3 x 2H, 2 x HB, or thereabouts -- the old one for oz, one for ian, one for the other member approach
but maybe that's asking a bit too much

though I have a preference for the HBs and Fs, I'd be happy with any of the them, so if either of the others have a preference, I'd take what was left

I love clutch pencils - used 'em for years but those baskets have been around here too :((.

1/4 drive socket set - had to buy another, tin snips, the old man's bush saw - heaps of stuff, pens and pencils too although they mess with me I think coz I find the odd one occasionally when the kids are doing homework - not that that happens too often - sometimes they take 'em and leave them on the table by the phone.

I keep locking the doors and windows but it doesn't stop them:~.

Got me budgerigar'd. Maybe it's that bloke down the road - can't remember his name - just call him "CudIborrow"http://cdn.woodworkforums.com/http://cdn.woodworkforums.com/images/smilies/actions/doh.gif

I'm not too fussy one way or the other, the gremlins will get them anyway. Probably best to split them as Ian suggested.

Reminds me of those maths puzzles. A man dies leaving his 72 sheep, 18 goats and 3 pigs to his 13 sons. How do they divide them equally without calling in the butcher?:D

Dont worry about a few pencils, I have been saying since 1983 that some b@#$%^ted
stole my Sidchrome breaker bar which I could have used a 1000 times over the years. I looked in a box which was under the seat of my old "R" Model Mack which i sold in 1983 and put the box in the shed. You would never guess where my breaker bar was or who is quite embarrassed about it as I have told many people about the loss of the item.

Incidently my shed still eats pencils and numerous items of great importance.
