View Full Version : No woodwork for a while

I've waited two weeks so I could post some good news.
Driving down the Pacific Hwy on a Saturday morning near home and a bloke (forgetting where he is) shoots out of a driveway and tries to cross all four lanes.
I find him first.. and T-bone him in the drivers side at 100kph ( no time to touch the brakes)
He was a very lucky bloke, he survived with a bunch of broken bits (leg, ankle, ribs, collarbones) it took an hour and a half to cut him out,
My camry wagon crumpled up exactly as the manufacturer intended :2tsup:
and after a day in emergency I was allowed home with a fractured sternum thanks to the seat belt (no really, thank you seat belt) and most of me in various shades of blue and purple.
Two weeks later and most bruises are now a jaundiced yellow, the sternum is knitting nicely, although I still can't laugh, cough or sneeze, and I'm still sleeping (sitting upright) on the ugliest recliner my wife could find at the op shop.

Things I've learned from the experience....

1...life is good.
2...a new respect for Newtons third law
3...MRI machines and six foot seven claustraphobes are natural enemies
4...did I mention life is good :)

Good health! (From another 6' 7" bloke who's had litterally dozens of naps in MRI machines while Grieg has been playing on the headphones.)

I'm surprised the Camry held up so well at 100kph.

geez Undy that was a close one. Don't spose it matters much whether you leave home with clean undies when that happens.:)
happy healing.

Phew! Congratulations on your survival relatively unscathed.
We have a lot to thank seatbelts for. D1 did some high-speed upside down parking and survived unscathed except for a bruise from the belt.

John is this your way of working in steel sculpture :U

Wow, what a crash that must have been.

Glad to hear both of you survived!

And I too am a claustrophobe and I cannot stand MRI machines. panic attacks all the way.

Oh its not just tall people with MRI machines I have broad shoulders  I could not fit in one here in Liverpool hospital. We have a NSW minister bulk purchased when he was health minister who has just resigned to thank for all those undersized MRI machines. However those Asians of Cabramatta fit neatly.:U

And they say Toyotas are boring!!
Take it easy (easier said than done) and wear out the keyboard for a while instead of wood.
Cheers,
Jim

Yeh, but I bet you didn't go in on the last Friday before Christmas like I did and I swear they forgot me. When I finally came out they were all p&^%ed and the nurses were all chirpy.
Did someone say music? All I got was hammering- probably the guy next door trying to get out. They forgot him too.

Underfoot, I'm glad you've lived to tell the tale.

What a sod. What a scare.

Mortality came knocking and your Camry blew it off.

...

For claustrophobes like me, if the thing is happening in a hospital I tell them that I'll throw up all over their machine if they don't provide a sedative.

If I have some notice I take a valium. The Doc is happy to prescribe. My teeth aren't the best cos I always hated having a mouth full of the dentist's hardware; couldn't care less about the pain. Since the valium discovery it's all smooth sailing.

Ouch....I can feel my teeth rattling.

So lucky to be able to sit around and talk about it.

All the best.

Will we be seeing a big Mer-Camry carving/sculpture in the near future.

(I'm heading up to Bellingen on Friday to see David's sculpture in the Council park.)

Thanks for all the well wishes folks :)
everything's healing up as per google search (and doctors prognosis),
the unexpected onset of tourettes (when I cough, sneeze or laugh) is also going away

Some more things I've discovered during convalescence.

1...life is good :)
2...Inactivity and underfoot are natural enemies, (some blokes should not be allowed too much time to ...just....sit...and..... think...:cool::(:?:oo:)
3...using downtime wisely and the interweb is a contradiction
4...mates that drop around and see if they can make me laugh are still mates...(the bastards).
5...did I mention that life is good :)

Well, you could look at the experience and plumb it for lessons about getting older and less able. The inactivity thing is a real challenge in my book.

Life is good & it is good to see you still have yours big fella. :2tsup:

I have had 2 people try to clobber me on the road so far, lucky for me, neither them or I we not traveling at any speed.
Both times it has been the other person's fault, they went through a red light.
Both times the car I have been in has had to be towed from the site.

I still count my lucky stars.

Ouch! Glad you are still with us underfoot and I am sure your family feels the same way. What happens to Mr Invulnerable - will he be charged?

I can really identify with the inactivity bit, and all I have stopping me are two detached tendons on the finger tips of my index and middle finger of my left hand. I'm wearing these little plastic splints and Doc says no using my left hand for the next 6 weeks for anything other than dressing myself and yes I can use a keyboard!

Compounded by being physically away from my shed for the last 3 months I'm frustrated as hell by this. Of course I could always get stuck into my day job backlog but that just doubles the frustration! ARRGGGGH!!!!

Bob, what a sod!

How'd it happen?

Maybe start a new thread so as not to detract from UF's brush with irrelevance mortality.

Sorry, I did not mean to downplay UFs case (hope you get better soon UF!) My story FWIW is trivial compared to UF's is here (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f67/least-expected-one-watch-out-122453/).

Holy crap Undy, glad to hear you are still with us mate. I knew you would be bored doing nothing, but also thought you would be actually going insane without the surfing.

Hope it all heals fast and you get back to it.
