The trees were due to be butchered this weekend - they even closed the line between Gordon & Hornsby for the event.
I think 'they' were going to leave the main trunks standing - just to taunt the passing public - and then remove the trunks during another line closure in a few months - all wood was going to be removed by freight train rather than by truck, presumeably to stop any souvenier hunting before the lot can be wood chipped.
Someone really needs to give these professional management drones a good beating - turning all station platorms into into open blasted plains is not a way to encourage people to use public transport.

Saw it on the news it was a truck given access to the station side removing it.
Poor excuse wheelchairs users found a problem getting over the exposed roots.
Looking at the stairs I'd have thought they were more a hindrance to wheelchair users.:U
Now what they will have to do is rip up the pavement of the station to remove all the roots.
So much for all the gardens that past station masters and past taxes have paid for.

I catch the train regularly from this station, and I do not think there is a more beautiful station in Sydney. The gardens are wonderfully kept and the trees are lovely. It is very true though that the roots are a pretty serious trip hazard. Many of them would have raised the surface of the walking area by 10-15cm, well away from the trunk.
Still, I wish something else could have been done. Bit of a butchers approach, I think.
Cheers,
Dave
